Mercedes Benz S-Class is not your average run-of-the-mill family sedan, but with a generous helping of hybrid technology, the Mercedes Benz S500 PHEV [Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle], manages to outclass everything else in the luxury sedan segment, at least in terms of fuel economy.
Go to the Environmental Protection Agency’s [EPA] Fuel Economy website and try to find anything with over 45mpg, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything resembling a luxury vehicle the likes of the Mercedes Benz S-Class. This is what makes the new Mercedes Benz S500 PHEV so special, as a PHEV rating at 78mpg [Your mileage may vary, duh!], there isn’t another luxury car that comes close! We could mention the Tesla Model S 85kWh, but Tesla Motors has denied that their decidedly upscale electric sedan is a luxury vehicle, but a performance vehicle.
The Mercedes Benz S500 PHEV is all luxury interior and the comfort features you’d expect in a luxury sedan, as well as an advanced PHEV powertrain for excellent performance and fuel economy. The 80kW electric motor and 3.0ℓ v6 can combine for a total power output of 436hp and a 0-60 sprint time of just 5.5s. At the same time, the PHEV S-Class’ lithium-ion battery pack allows it to go about 18mi in EV mode. Overall, Mercedes Benz expects the S500 PHEV to hit nearly 80mpg combined using both electricity and gasoline.
The Mercedez Benz S500 PHEV isn’t the first hybrid for the Mercedes lineup, but is certainly the most powerful and advanced, as well as most fuel-efficient. Previous hybrid Mercedes Benz S-Class hybrid offerings include the S300 and S400, which are rated at 54mpg and 37mpg, respectively. Just for comparison, the Lexus LS600hL is rated at just 20mpg and has nearly identical performance specifications.
