Volvo has been testing lately their newest innovation in the field of electric cars - an electric car range extender based on a hydrogen fuel cell powered by liquid organic fuels, such as petrol. New Hydrogen Storage from Metal Alloy 40% Lighter Than Batteries

Robin Gremaud, a researcher from Netherlands, found out through experimentation that an alloy of the metals magnesium, titanium and nickel is absorbing hydrogen very well. What's most interesting about his discovery is that the three metals form a very light alloy, about 40% lighter than a Lithium Ion battery pack at the same size (for example, a Prius battery weights 317 kg, while this hydrogen tank would only weight 200 kg).

Mazda Postpones H2 Car Because of Poor Existing Storage

They don't want to use hydrogen in a fuel cell device, but rather burn it and use the power. The principle is the same with the one in BMW 7-series from last year, but they have something different on hand. Mazda doesn't use the classic piston-engine, which can backfire sometimes if fueled with hydrogen. Instead, they use a Wankel rotary engine.

This video is a clip from a 1978 CBC News, showing Jack Nicholson driving a hydrogen powered car. The concept existed since then, the hydrogen was packed in high pressure tanks, and the engine's timing (top dead center) was retarded a bit (probably 8 degrees, it's a common value). And, as extra value, the hydrogen was obtained from solar power, through some solar panels, cutting edge tech at that time.

A British company, ITM, has invented a device that does electrolysis and splits water into hydrogen. They even modified a Ford Focus to run on the hydrogen they make(basically no big deal, just a few adjustments to the top dead center of the pistons and a little chip tricking on the exhaust).

Despite all the accusations that blame them not caring for, it seems like General Motors is getting more and more involved in the making of a fueling infrastructure for their fuel cell cars. GM has already invested heavily in two different ethanol companies (Coskata and Mascoma). Now they have partnered with Clean Energy Fuels Corp. to open a hydrogen fueling station near the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The stationshould be operational by 2008 fall.
