A couple of years ago I was mad about getting a Toyota Prius, by then the only hybrid car on the market. A few years later I changed my mind to the gorgeous design and good fuel consumption of Honda Civic's 2007 hatchback. But that's not the only reason I did not go for a hybrid... yet.

A recent study performed by University of Texas researchers shows the advantages of using plug-in hybrid vehicles such as the upcoming Prius over the ozone. The scenario in which the ozone layer is badly affected by pollution is already well documented, but the basics fact is that the gas is formed when hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides react with sunlight. For humans, though, breathing ozone in high quantities can be damaging for health by causing respiratory problems.

The Japanese company has big plans for the next couple of years: introducing seven new hybrid cars, updating four existing versions and a fully electric vehicle. Also, a hydrogen fuel cell powered car is expected by 2015.
