Siemens to Test eHighway, an Electric Heavy Truck Powering System in California
Posted by Ovidiu Sandru in Electric Vehicles on May 17, 2012
Siemens has been prototyping lately something that’s not new, but which can ultimately do to highways what electric buses (also called trolleys) have done to European cities – cleaning them of dirty diesel smoke. The company is converting heavy trucks into hybrid and putting an overhead power line along the highway so that they can [...]

SIM-WIL: The Japanese Electric Ride That Rivals Gasoline Sports Cars
Posted by Ovidiu Sandru in Electric Vehicles on April 3, 2012
Do you remember SIM-LEI? You probably don’t, as its name doesn’t say much (like Nissan Leaf does, for instance), but that’s the first car SIM-Drive Corp, a Japanese company built last year. Now they’re announcing the brand-new SIM-WIL, a more advanced piece of electronics (read: electric car) that will outperform the first and many sports [...]

Coda Automotive Cuts $5,000 Off Their Electric Sedan
Posted by Ovidiu Sandru in Electric Vehicles on November 17, 2011
For some time I’ve been wanting to write mostly about electric car startups, since I think they can sometimes offer more value than long-established carmakers. Coda Autmotive, for example, is one such example not often mentioned by the specialized press. They only haveĀ one product, the Coda Sedan, that they just announced it’ll sell $5,000 cheaper [...]

E-Volo: World's First Manned Electric Multicopter Takes Off Successfully
Posted by Ovidiu Sandru in Electric Vehicles on November 7, 2011
Once in a while, innovation sparks in some people’s minds, resulting in things that could change everything from then on. Thomas Senkel, a German engineer, just like the early aircraft pioneers did at the beginning of the 20th century, performed a first manned flight in a 16-rotor electric multicopter he called “e-Volo”. His flight lasted [...]

Chevy Spark EV to Make Its U.S. Debut in 2013
Posted by Ovidiu Sandru in Electric Vehicles on October 18, 2011
After quitting the electric car program in 2003 and effectively trashing any of its remains (who knows the story knows that I’m referring to the EV1), General Motors is back into the electric car business. Starting with the Volt, which was expected to be a bigger success than it is, the company is now announcing [...]

EKZ's Software Manages Whether Your EV Charges With Renewable Energy or Not
Posted by Ovidiu Sandru in Electric Vehicles on October 13, 2011
Swiss people have traditionally been very precise, civilized and conscious (one can even say eco-conscious, judging by how their country runs). Now, a Swiss firm, EKZ, working with IBM, is trying to “civilize” how electric cars will charge, even if electric cars haven’t made it to regular Joe’s garage… yet. EKZ has already developed a [...]

As you may have already been accustomed, we’ve been following with great attention every move Tesla Motors makes and every new prototype they release. Katie Fehrenbacher from GigaOm is also doing that. She actually went to test the new Model S in person and, as you can see in the following video, she was very [...]

New Wireless Power Transmission System for EVs Uses Tires' Steel Wires
Posted by Ovidiu Sandru in Electric Vehicles on August 30, 2011
When you think of an electric vehicle, batteries are the second thing that comes to mind, since they’re so expensive and inefficient these days. Masahiro Hanazawa and Takashi Ohira from Toyota and Toyohashi University of Technology, respectively, have devised a wireless system that could power electric cars indefinitely while they travel along the road. However, [...]

Top Gear's Bad Jokes Hit The Nissan Leaf This Time
Posted by Ovidiu Sandru in Electric Vehicles on August 9, 2011
Now, filming for a new series of their Top Gear show, petrolhead Jeremy Clarkson and his crew apparently rode a Nissan Leaf for 30 miles until the battery ran out, only to show how they don’t believe electric cars are not the future, and have some spectators push the car to the nearest wall socket, at the University of Lincoln.

Posted by Ovidiu Sandru in Green News on June 29, 2011
Unlike the U.S., Europe is well-known for its low emission cars, small and highly-efficient engines. A recent EU report claims Europe’s fuel efficiency has even risen in 2010, bringing carbon emissions down about 3.7 percent. The target is to reach 130 grams of CO2 per kilometer by 2015.

Posted by Ovidiu Sandru in Energy Storage on June 16, 2011
EVs are not so common these days, but if they make enough financial sense, we’ll see them flooding cities soon enough. As Denmark is currently the country which profits the most from wind power, Nuvve, the U.S.-based company that created the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) system, has announced that it will start using Denmark’s electric vehicles as buffers for stabilizing the grid frequency, Cleantechnica reports.

Nissan Leaf Owners Complain About Start Issues
Posted by Ovidiu Sandru in Electric Vehicles on April 12, 2011
Just like all of its predecessors tinkering with electricity such as the Prius or Tesla’s Roadster, the Nissan Leaf has already been tagged with problems by some of its only 450 owners in the U.S.. The issue in this case is not safety-related, but merely a functional one: at times, the Leaf refuses to start.

Z-Kart: 4-Wheeled Electric Vehicle Built In a Garage, Meant to Inspire
Posted by Ovidiu Sandru in Electric Vehicles on April 8, 2011
Z-Kart is the name of George Fortin’s newest vehicle. Called by some a contraption, and by others an image of a dream, the Z-Kart doesn’t have at all any of the safety requirements of a modern automobile. It is rather a four-wheel carriage that drives electrically, but what’s most important, though, is that it’s made in a garage… in California.
