Wind power had always been considered our salvation from peril, our last and most accessible "renewable" resource on this planet. Well, Axel Kleidon, a scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena, Germany, has another theory: wind and wave power are not so renewable and infinite, after all.

The power plant has been named "Wing Waves," and works by harvesting the elliptical motion of waves 30 to 60 feet deep, and converting it into electricity.

Industrial designer Chris Allen has come up with an idea to use plastic bottles that we usually throw away to help generate energy from wind.

As waves activate it, the pump delivers high pressure water through a sub-sea pipeline straight to the shore, as seen in the picture above.

The device is a Oscillating Water Column which was first deployed in 2005 but this had undergone planned refurbishment and modifications this year. Today the device is again up and running and can generate from 100 Kw up to 1.5 MW, depending on the waves and requirements from consumers.

While about a month ago I was presenting an article about Suntory Mermaid II, a boat powered only by the movement of the waves, I am now presenting an inventor, named Francois Kneider, who in his seventies, continues to amaze the people who know him by the number of ideas he has and the innovations he brought to life. In 2005, he focused on building wave powered systems for boats.

The wave powered boat is called "Suntory Mermaid II". It has a speed of 5 knots, which is three times slower than traditional diesel powered boats. With some improvement in the wave-propulsion technology and combining it with wind sailing we can hope that it will become competitive with fossil fuels-powered boats.

Francis Farley, an experimental physicist (I like them much more than the theoreticias), has invented the "Anaconda" wave powered device. It can mainly be described as a large distensible tube, made out of rubber, closed at both ends and filled with water. The Anaconda tube is designed to be anchored just below the sea's surface, with one of its ends facing the oncoming waves.

A long time ago, nature set its oceans and the living things in them. There were plants residing on the bottom of the ocean, plants who sway back and forth, as the water moves around them. So, BioPower Systems from Australia thought that making an under-ocean energy collecting system whose movement resembles with the one […]

The wave turbine is a free energy device and is presented here. How it works is very simple, as anyone can imagine. Waves hit the shores, they enter a cavity, in the cavity there is some air, and the air pushes the propellers of a turbine which produces electricity. That type of turbine has been […]
